TN Godman Foretells Future for Mankind While Standing on a Sickle

THOOTHUKUDI: When you go to meet this godman, who reportedly predicts not only your future but the entire country’s, be sure to take along a full bottle of liquor as kaanikkai (offering).
Every Tamil New Year’s Day, the godman, 27-year-old Murugan, at Karuppasamy Temple in Muthiapuram, Thoothukudi, consumes copious amounts of liquor neat (three litres, by some accounts) and starts predicting the future of not only his devotees but mankind itself.

On Tuesday, before consuming liquor, he offered special prayers to Karuppasamy. He was then taken to a spot in front of the temple. Here, he declared that Lord Karuppasamy had entered his body.
He was then lifted up by his followers and made to stand on the sharp edge of a four-foot sickle as they held him for balance.
Murugan then raised his voice and asked the gathering to believe that Karuppasamy had indeed entered his body and that the words coming out of his mouth were the Lord’s.
Standing on the sickle for 20 minutes, he delivered his arul vaaku (predictions). There were no signs of blood or cuts on his feet.
For the current Tamil year, he predicted an increase in the magnitude of natural calamities like floods and a rise in loss of human lives, death of an important political leader in India, increase in enmity between Tamil Nadu and another State, end of the fishermen struggle between India and Sri Lanka and so on. The so-called ‘prophet’ also took a break from the predictions to smoke a suruttu (country cigar).
Murugan claims that all the predictions made by him in the last year had come true, including an increase in flight accidents, change in the Central government, good rain in Tamil Nadu, increase in problems faced by students and labourers etc.
The predictions were followed by annadhanam, in which a large number of devotees, especially women, participated. Murugan’s close associate Sekar, narrated a series of incidents.
“When he was seven, Murugan had gone to Karuppasamy Temple at Varusanadu in Theni district and it was during this first visit that Karuppasamy reportedly entered Murugan,” said Sekar.
“Ten years on, he visited the place at Muthiapuram where the temple is now located and started offering arul vaaku. When people asked him who he was, initially he did not reply,” narrated Sekar. “After 21 pieces of camphor were lit on his hand, he revealed that he was Karuppasamy,” Sekar claimed.
A 27-year-old godman in Thoothukudi who claims to predict major events has a deep connect with liquor bottles.
Sekar, his aide, narrated how, ten years ago, Murugan had started giving arul vaaku (prophecies) in Muthiapuram, Thoothukudi.
“After 21 pieces of camphor were lit on his hand, he revealed that he was Karuppasamy and had come to help the people,” claimed Sekar. Initially, a small hut was established at that place and Murugan started telling arul vaaku to a small group of devotees. As time passed, his fame reached neighbouring areas and more devotees started pouring in. The devotees also give the godman liquor bottles and they are consumed by him during “important occasions”.
Five large liquor bottles are always seen in front of the Karuppasamy statue there. He meets devotees three days a week. One of the devotees, K P Kandasamy, said he had been mired in a legal case and after Murugan’s words, he had succeeded, following which he had built the temple. Each idol in the temple was presented by devotees like Kandasamy, claimed Sekar.
A devotee, Kamala, from Thoothukudi, claimed that she had been visiting the temple for the past six years and every word uttered by Murugan had come true so far. Hamala’s husband had faced huge losses in business and when they approached Murugan for a solution, he told them to perform a special prayer at the temple and asked them to give a bottle of liquor. http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil_nadu/TN-Godman-Foretells-Future-for-Mankind-While-Standing-on-a-Sickle/2015/04/15/article2764822.ece
