Sitting too much at work? It's slowly killing you

There's a devil in your office and it isn't in the nasty vending machine chatter, that project deadline or gruesome work meetings ahead of you. Instead, it's lurking in your chair. That's right! Sitting has been termed as the number one lifestyle disease in 2015, and this year, too. Not only has it been shown to take years of our lives, but also hurt the body in more ways than one. So, if you're a chair-potato, sit up and take heed...
WATCH OUT! SITTING IS JUST LIKE SMOKING

Face it. We park ourselves on the chair way too much. After those meetings, pending tasks and eating at lunch, we then get home and commence another round of sitting, either at the dining table or in front of the TV. Research has pointed out how sitting is 'the new smoking'. Thus if you find yourself hunched over that presentation for hours, it's going to cost you. Such inactivity raises obesity risk, causes muscle stiffness, bone deterioration, heart disease, vein-thrombosis and more. And since anyone can fit into the category everyone is at risk.

HOW IT CAUSES HARM

Makes you overweight: Those who grapple with sedentary jobs are weightier than those who do not, say studies. Sitting also accumulates the storage of fat.
Increases heart attack risk: Studies have sounded the alarm over how those who spend the major part of the day glued to the chair are at 54 per cent greater risk of getting a heart attack.
Causes diabetes: Excessive sitting can also spike glucose levels and is a potential trigger for diabetes.
Deteriorates spine: One of the worst effects of over sitting is its impact on the back. It can create acute back pain and lead to bad spine health, owing to muscle tightness from sitting in one position.
Muscle degeneration and spondylitis: Feel that acute neck and shoulder pain after a long workday at the desk? You might be to prone developing ankylosing spondylitis, which is a type of arthritis that affects the spine. It can cause chronic inflammation, soreness and stiffness. It also causes poor posture.
Affects mental health: Those who sit for long are also cut off emotionally from others. Inactivity reduces motivation levels and can leave you feeling dull and listless.

EXERCISE CAN SAVE YOU
Cutting back on the time you spend sitting may not be easy due to work responsibilities, but there are ways to work around it...
  • Go ahead, do some desk-ercise: Take a break at least twice a day and do stretching exercises. Extend your arms outwards and bend sideways. Hold and release. You can also do shoulder shrugs and rolls as well as lunges by the desk. You can also have an office group spin sessions for half an hour in the day where people can do an endurance workout together.
  • Take a lunch hour stroll: Simply get out of the chair and get moving. Take a walk around the block during lunch time or if you are heading downstairs, climb up or down using the stairs. This is said to make a difference in glucose levels, lipids and body mass index.
  • Try a walking meeting: Pack a pair of slip-ons to the office, for the new fad is to do a walking meeting. Several companies, even in Mumbai, are resorting to taking the daily meeting out on the terrace on in a park. Not only does this burn calories, but the exercise builds adrenaline and circulation and adds to the bonhomie. We like!
  • Sit-stand offices: Several companies in the West have adapted a sit-stand workstation, where employees are encouraged to stand more than sit. Being on the feet this way is said to prevent clots and joint aches that are known to occur during sedentary periods. This transition from completely sitting is also said to eliminate musculoskeletal pain.
Popular in places like the Silicon Valley, stand-up desks or treadmill desks are now catching on. A gadget where you have a desk that is tweaked to accommodate a treadmill, this allows the user to walk while doing tasks. The desk is said to boost productivity, allow you to focus, leaving you feeling invigorated.

how get rid of blackheads, naturally

https://nose-blackheads.com/

stretches you must do every morning

Now finally, you have a legit reason to stay in bed a tad bit longer. And no, you won't be branded lazy for it! Experts say that stretching your body gently post waking up, helps deal with the sluggish early-morning feeling, and also give relief to your aching and tight muscles. Do the following stretching exercises, before you kick-start your day.

Side stretch
Sit in Padmasan or with your legs crossed in the lotus position. As you stretch out your hands in front of you, slowly link and interlace fingers. Your palm should be facing outwards. Stretch your arms out as far and then slowly extend your arms up above your head. Keep your fingers interlaced all the time as you stretch. Then, slowly (from your waist) bend towards your right as far as you can, come back straight up and then bend towards your left.                                 This stretches your upper body, shoulders, arms and obliques

Spine twist
Lie down on your back. Now, raise your leg and bring one knee towards your stomach and hold it with your opposite hand. Next, gently twist your spine as you pull your knee towards the floor across your body. You don't need to touch the floor with your knee. The key is to keep both your shoulders on the floor as you stretch and twist your spine. Once back to the starting position, you can do the opposite side.
This stretches your spine, back and glutes

Hip lift
Sit with your legs crossed and place both hands behind you with palms flat on the floor and fingers pointing outwards. Shift your weight to your hands as you slowly let your head fall back. Apply pressure on your palms as you lift off your body and butt off the floor, and you slowly bring your chest and hips towards the ceiling. Pause for a few seconds, go back to the starting position and repeat.
This stretches your hips, abs and chest

Long Stretch
Stand straight and inhale as you reach your arms high up over your head. Stretch your arms up as you gradually stand on your toes. Feel your entire body stretching. Exhale and return to the standing position. Now slowly bend forward and touch your toes. Feel every bone in your spine bend one after the other slowly. Avoid bending your knees. You can feel your entire torso stretch, beginning from your neck, to upper back, middle back, lower back, hamstrings, feet, shoulders and hands.
This stretches your entire body, neck, back and torso

DIY remedies for a cold

With the weather in the city being unpredictable of late, most people tend to catch a case of the sniffles. After all, who likes working with a blocked (or runny) nose, a sore throat, or even a mild temperature? If you are tired of popping a pill three times a day, or simply do not have the time to visit the doctor, here are some grandma-certified home remedies, which will help you have a speedy recovery.

Honey and ginger juice
Honey is known to soothe the throat, and ginger is known to have antibiotic properties. Grind up some ginger and mix it with an equal amount of honey, and consume it as is. If you find that the taste is not to your liking, you could mix it with half a glass of warm milk, too. It instantly clears up the nasal passage and soothes a dry throat.

Turmeric
Turmeric can be used in multiple ways. If you have whole turmeric bulbs, burn one end of the bulb, and inhale the smoke for instant relief. Alternatively, you could boil turmeric powder with milk and drink the mixture. There is nothing the good old manjapaal cannot fix, is there?

know your pasta!

With Italian food fast becoming popular across the globe after Chinese food, pasta, which is synonymous with this cuisine, has also become a mealtime favourite in Indian homes. There are over 500 types of pasta available that can be served in different sauces to make up myriad dishes. So if you're bored of penne or spaghetti and are looking for some variety in your pasta, here are some that you can find on your supermarket shelves.

Conchiglie
This kind of pasta is popularly known as seashell- or shell-shaped pasta.

Maccheroni
It is most popularly known as elbow or macaroni and is available in the form of narrow tubes. They are well suited to soups and salads.

Farfalle
This is similar to spaghetti, in the sense that it is a noodle kind of pasta, but much thicker and with a hollow centre.

Fusilli
This is long, thick, corkscrew-shaped pasta or, ideally speaking, spiral pasta that is normally used in casseroles and salads.

Cavatappi
It is a short S-shaped pasta tube that looks like a small corkscrew. Its slender, spiral shape makes it suitable for serving with sauces, salads and casseroles.

Farfalle
Commonly known as bow-tie pasta, it is derived from the Italian word 'farafalla', which means 'butterfly'. This can be used in casseroles and meat sauce pastas.

Rigatoni
Rigatoni is a form of long, hollow tube-shaped pasta of varying lengths and diameters. It is larger than penne and sometimes slightly curved, but not as curved as elbow macaroni.

dietician advice for todays human

Rujuta Diwekar is highest paid dietician in India. She is the one who took care of junior Ambani to lose 108 kgs. Please read her advice to diabetics . . .

  1. Eat LOCAL fruits. Like Banana, Grapes, Chikoo, Mangoes. All fruits have FRUCTOSE so it doesn't matter that you are eating a mango over an Apple. A Mango comes from Konkan and Apple from Kashmir. So Mango is more local to you.

Eat all the above fruits in DIABETES as the FRUCTOSE will eventually manage your SUGAR

  2. Choose Seed oils than Veggie oils. Like choose ground nut, mustard, coconut & til. Don't choose chakachak packing oils, like olive,  rice bran etc
Go for kachchi ghani oils than refined oils

  3. Rujuta spends max time in her talks talking about GHEE and its benefits.
Eat GHEE daily. How much GHEE we should eat depends on food. Few foods need more GHEE then eat more and vice versa. Eat ample GHEE. It REDUCES cholesterol.

  4. Include COCONUT. Either scraped coconut over food like poha, khandvi or chutney with idli and dosa
Coconut has ZERO CHOLESTEROL and it makes your WAIST SLIM

  5. Don't eat oats, cereals for breakfast. They are packaged food and we don't need them.  Also they are tasteless and boring and our day shouldn't start with boring stuff.
Breakfast should be poha, upma, idli, dosa, paratha

  6. Farhaan Akhtar's New ad of biscuits - fibre in every bite... Even ghar ka kachara has fibre, likewise oats have fibre. Don't chose them for fibre. Instead of oats, eat poha, upma, idli, dosa

  7. No JUICES till you have teeth in your mouth to chew veggies and fruits

  8. SUGARCANE is the real DETOX . Drink the juice fresh or eat the SUGARCANE

  9. For pcos, thyroid - do strength training and weight training and avoid all packaged food

10. RICE - eat regular WHITE RICE. NO NEED of Brown rice. Brown rice needs 5-6 whistles to cook and when it tires your pressure cooker, then why do you want to tire your tummy.

A white rice is hand pounded simple rice

Rice is not high is GI INDEX.  Rice has mediun GI index and by eating it with daal / dahi / kadhi we bring its GI index further down
If we take ghee over this daal chawal then the GI INDEX is brought further down.
B.
Rice has some rich minerals and you can eat it even three times a day

11. How much should we eat - eat more if you are more hungry, let your stomach be your guide and vice versa

12. We can eat rice and chapati together or only rice if you wish. It depends on your hunger. Eat RICE in ALL THREE MEALS without any fear.

13. Food shouldn't make you scared like eating rice and ghee. Food should make you FEEL GOOD

14. NEVER look at CALORIES. Look at NUTRIENTS

15. No bread, biscuits, cakes, pizza, pasta

16. Ask yourself is this the food my Nani & Dadi ate?  If yes then eat without fear.

17. Eat as per your season. Eat pakoda, fafda, jalebi in monsoon. Your hunger is as per season. Few seasons we need fried food so eat them.

18. When not to have chai - tea - don't drink tea as the first thing in morning or when you are hungry. Rest you can have it 2-3 times a day and with sugar

19. NO GREEN tea please. No green, yellow, purple, blue tea.

20. Eat ALL of your TRADITIONAL foods.

21. Strictly NO to packaged foods / drinks.

22. Exercise / Walk more to digest & stay healthy.

Retirement Planning … A case study ✍ elderly couple

Sender of this message, returning from Goa, happened to share their bench seat with an elderly couple who had just crossed seventy.
Husband has retired from senior level position in Central Government.
The  wife has retired as steno typist from one of the respected names in private sector after forty years long service.
While sharing general topics, inadverdently touched on favourite topic of retirement planning.

Here are some of the gems that picked up from uncle:

1) Do not dream on behalf of your children. They have their own dreams and aspirations. Parents job is only to fund education.

2) The generation to generation view of life changes drastically. Learn to take it cool.

3) Do not over invest in real estate. The children are too busy to maintain property which is outside their place of work. This couple in their seventies visits Goa every month to maintain their second home.

4) Land purchased by the couple has been encroached with only a third portion of it in their possession. Children do not have inclination to fight it out in court.
Children are highly educated and well placed in life. With their spouses also working, no one is interested in assets owned by parents.

5) Cash invested in some form which gives regular interest or is easily encashable is most important than anything else.
The uncle gets monthly pension of Rs. 35000 and yet even one monthly pension is delayed, they get jitters.

6) Major investments of family are in real estate and Gold. Both they are not able to sell.

7) Mediclaim was ignored when the health was perfect. Now both partners had to undergo  sugeries where a total of Rs. 8 Lacs has gone from savings.

His parting message
👉 My son, Cash is very important. Invest in asset which gives you regular income and easy liquidity. Also take very good care of your health. Good health plus Good Cash is Happy Retirement.
Lots of learning from this lovely co

Night sleep

Dengue and chikengunia

In a important seminar in New Delhi a renowned  doctor stressed upon the fact that how much ignorant the common public is about the topic and how the doctors, at large, are making money out of the ignorance and fear in minds of the patients and their attendants.

He stressed that nowadays Dengue and chikengunia are the two types of viral fever, commonly prevalent and hospitals are running out of beds in Delhi NCR and other areas.  He educated that the Virus hide between the cells and are not present in the blood stream and so they cannot be destroyed through medicines because the medicine work through blood only.  Our body, which is a super computer, has its own mechanism to fight the virus.  It raises its temperature beyond normal level to fight the bacteria/ virus.  This causes us discomfort and dis-ease and we go to doctor for treatment.  The doctor gives us medicine for fever and as the temperature comes down, the mechanism of the body is hampered and the virus is escaped and it remains inside the body and attacks again after some time.

Whenever there is any viral or bacterial attack body raises  its temperature, throws out body waste in the form of loose motion, vomiting, cold and cough etc. and by taking medicine to control these conditions we simply harm our body.

Then question arises what to do in this situation.  Dr Choudhury told that we have to monitor the body temperature and as it goes beyond 102.2 degree, we have to administer cold compress on head and calf muscles till the temperature comes down.  Cold compress means, take four small towels and dip them into ice cold water, squeeze it and place it on head and one each on calf muscles after ecery 2-3 minutes, till the time the temperature comes to normal.
No medicine is to be taken in such scenario.  He has formulated a three day diet chart for the patient, to follow and by doing this  the patient will surely be cured.  The diet plan is as under :-

Day-1.- divide your weight by 10 and that much number glasses of  Mosumbi juice  and equal quantity of Coconut water to be taken throughout the whole day.  If the patient is 60 kg of weight then he must take 06 glasses of both the juices and no solid food.

Day-2. divide your weight by 20 and that much glasses of mosumbi juice and equal quantity of coconut water and weight X 5 grams of tomato + cucumber.

Day-3. divide your Weight by 30 and that much glasses of mosumbi juice and equal quantity of coconut water and weight X 5 grams of tomato + cucumber in lunch and normal home cooked food for dinner.

By taking these steps we can successfully cure any kind of viral/ bacterial fever in three days, without causing any harm to the body and without interrupting the body mechanism.
We need not panic during fever, cough/ cold/ vomiting/ loose motions but we must monitor the temperature and manage it as discussed above and supply sufficient fluids as discussed above. When we go to doctor/hospital they prescribe unnecessary test/ diagnostics to make money out of our fear and ignorance. The need of the hour is to educate ourselves and others also.  Rest the body will do at its own.

Phone number of Doctor Biswaroop Roy Chodhury is 9312286540.
All the Best. Stay healthy and fit. Please do Yoga and Pranayam everyday to remain healthy and medicine/ doctor free for at least 100 years of age, as our ancestors used to live. as received in forwared whatsapp msg

Five second 'food on floor rule' really safe?

IANS |
The widely accepted notion says its is all right to scoop up food and eat it within a "safe" five-second window..The widely accepted notion says its is all right to scoop up food and eat it within a "safe" five-second window..
Food, once dropped on the floor, is not safe to eat, however quickly you pick it up, warns a new study that debunks the widely accepted notion that it is all right to scoop up food and eat it within a "safe" five-second window.

Moisture, type of surface and contact-time all contribute to cross-contamination. In some instances, the transfer begins in less than one second, the study said.

"The popular notion of the 'five-second rule' is that food dropped on the floor, but picked up quickly, is safe to eat because bacteria need time to transfer," said Donald Schaffner, Professor at the Rutgers University at New Jersey, in the US.

"We decided to look into this because the practice is so widespread. The topic might appear 'light' but we wanted our results backed by solid science," Schaffner noted.

The researchers tested four surfaces -- stainless steel, ceramic tile, wood and carpet -- and four different foods -- watermelon, bread, bread and butter, and gummy candy.

They also looked at four different contact times -- less than one second, five, 30 and 300 seconds.

They used two media -- tryptic soy broth or peptone buffer -- to grow Enterobacter aerogenes, a nonpathogenic "cousin" of Salmonella naturally occurring in the human digestive system.

Top 20 stocks that performed consistently in the past 20 years; retirement bets?

Aug 16, 2016, 12.30 PM IST

A survey conducted by global investment bank firm HSBC showed 47 per cent of working people in India have not started saving for their future or have stopped or faced difficulties while saving.

Retirement planning is a complex process. Ideally, retirement planning should consist of a mix of different assets classes and instruments such as equities, MFs, debt plans, as well as monthly income schemes, NPS etc.

According to a report by Centrum Wealth, 20 stocks which have performed consistently from the year 1996 include Infosys, Aurobindo Pharma, ZEE Entertainment, Cipla, HDFC Bank, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Hero MotoCorp, Rolta India, Pfizer, RIL, Tata Elxi and Gujarat Gas, among others.

Top performers of 1996-2001 in the S&P BSE500 index were no longer the top performers in the subsequent five years. "In general, all the stocks gave consistent returns in the subsequent periods as well," Kunj Bansal, CIO & ED, Centrum Wealth Management, said in a report.

"It is always said that equity is a long-term asset and gives better returns over long term. If one looks at the indices, this is true and equity does emerge as an asset class that has outperformed all other asset classes over a longer period, in terms of percentage return," he said.

How much equity will not be too much?

Retirement planning involves a period spanning 20-25 years and taking a call on stock might be a complicated task, experts said. However, there are various measures or filters which investors can deploy to handpick stocks or sectors which can withstand the test of time.

"Percentage allocation depends on risk and age profiles of investors. Ideally, retirement planning should begin as soon as an individual reaches 30 years," Dharmesh Kant, HEAD- Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, told ETMarkets.com.

"Assuming the person is in the age bracket of 30 to 35 years, around 70 per cent of savings should ideally be invested in equities, 20 per cent should be invested in fixed deposits and 10 per cent in various insurance products, which can include medical insurance as well," he said.

To pick stocks for a retirement portfolio, investors should first analyse the business. Does it have the potential to survive the next 20-25 years? In other words, is the business moat likely to be challenged by any disruptive breakthrough?

"Disruption can be in the form enabling the business further. For example; food, garments, housing, automobile, pharmaceuticals are businesses that will stay for the foreseeable future," said Kant.

Another important thing to analyse is the inflation factor. Since it is difficult to form a definite view on the nominal inflation, it is better to delink your portfolio as much as possible from the inflationary pressures, suggest experts.

"Purely from a portfolio construction perspective, there are a few ground rules. Considering the global interest rate environment, it is good to lock in your money in long-term instruments that offer a reasonably good interest rate," Pankaj Sharma, Head of Equities, Equirus Securities, told ETMarkets.com.

"The other rule is diversification. It is the key but use fixed return instruments a little more as you need regular income, and do not forget to hedge your portfolio with non-financial assets like precious metals and real estate," he said.

There is no golden rule for selecting stocks as it depends on many factors, including how much initial corpus you are starting with.

"We would look at, long term potential and the history of the stock, dividend yield, management quality among other parameters," said Sharma. Based on the above parameters, he recommends Britannia, GAIL, Coal India, Sun Pharma and Torrent Pharma.

Sectors which look attractive for next 20 years:

Dharmesh Kant, Head of Retail Research, Motilal Oswal Financial Services, recommend five sectors that investors can consider for retirement planning:

Banking & finance: Finance is the backbone of any economy and has been there since the inception of civilization. For any economic activity institution like banks and NBFCs will be needed for project funding, or meeting the working capital requirement.

Automobiles: Transportation is an integral part of any economy. Companies which keep pace with technological breakthrough and advancement for better transportation products offer merit in selection.

Pharmaceuticals: Medicines are required at every stage of human life. Right from the time a child is conceived till the time last breath is inhaled. It can be for curing a disease or just for maintaining a healthy life style.

Companies with proven track records and focus on new product development through intensive research merits selection for long term investing.

Consumption: This area is vast. It can be biscuits, confectionery, soaps, electrical and electronic equipment like television, air conditioners, refrigerators, fans, bulbs etc., garments, home furnishing among others.

Management's vision and company's adaptability to timely come out with new products as per changing consumer preferences are key criteria for selection in the portfolio.

Materials: For any construction be it roads, ports, airports, shopping complexes, dwelling units, commercial complexes, hospitals, schools, civic amenities etc., construction material is required like steel, cement, copper. Investors can look at companies with sustainable business model which merit selection in the long term portfolio.

Yoga expert A.G. Mohan and his family will be feted at the European convention opening on August 21. Geetha Venkataramanan has the details.

The link between mind and body is stressed several times during the conversation with A.G. Mohan, yoga expert, direct disciple of centenarian T. Krishnamacharya. Mohan’s reverence for his guru reveals itself as he quotes the master and recalls anecdotes. Naturally, for Mohan spent nearly two decades with the scholar, a period that shaped this engineer’s personality and life.
“Yes, the day I listened to his lecture way back in 1971 became the turning point. I resigned my position as an engineer and went to him, not to learn yoga but to seek his guidance for my spiritual pursuit,” says Mohan. But he went on to learn the science of yoga, Ayurveda and Vedanta. In 1976, Venkata Desikachar and Mohan founded the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, where along with wife Indra, he taught for two decades.
“Krishnamacharya is the father of modern yoga, who followed the principles of Pathanjali,” says Mohan, who has preserved the scholar’s Vedic chanting at the age of 96. “Look at that intonation... what clarity in the enunciation!” he marvels. I was fortunate to sit at his feet and drink from the fount of his knowledge,” reminisces Mohan.
Yoga has never been more popular than now, it seems. Mohan agrees. It is promoted as panacea for all ills, taught and learnt everywhere. “Why, internet dishes out asanas and there are so many styles,” laughs Mohan and continues on a serious note. “The awareness is good, from the health point of view. But well-trained teachers are important and the bottom-line is individual requirement.”
Mohan is quick to point out that yoga should not be confused with Enlightenment. In other words, not all yoga practitioners are enlightened souls. “Although it is closely allied to the spiritual path, yogam does not lead to enlightenment,” he clarifies.
“Just as yoga is not mere asanas,” chimes in wife Indra. Also a student of Krishnamacharya and one of the few to have received a post-graduate diploma in the subject from him, she has been a pillar of support in Mohan’s extraordinary journey spanning nearly five decades. She specialises in the practice of yoga for women. “Each body is different, more so in the case of women. There can never be a template within which the moves can be confined. Practice of unsuitable asanas can lead to problems, even interfere with the menstrual cycle,” she cautions.
The why and the who are at the base of yoga teaching, says Mohan. “What kind of a person is the learner and why does he want to learn. The lessons depend on the answers to these simple questions,” he expands. Yoga may be learnt for three purposes - for fitness, as therapy and spiritual, all of which he will explore at the congress.
Yoga is not all about fantastic postures and slim physique.
What then is yoga?
Mohan and Indra stress on Breath. “Relaxed breathing is key to sound mind and healthy body. Long exhalations are vital for a calm mind. But these are stress-filled times. You feel the heart racing, leaving you short of breath, the base for all maladies,” they explain.
The Krishnamacharya school lays stress on breathing and mind control. Slowly postures are introduced. “Group learning is fine, may be to children. It is individual teaching with the focus on the requirement and capacity that will deliver results,” says Indra. Patience and dedication on the part of the teacher and the learner are important.
“Mental problem is going to be the biggest challenge of the years to come,” says A.G. Mohan, quoting a renowned psychologist. “Did you hear of so many cases of depressions, say ten years ago? Young adults seek counselling and psychiatric help to tackle depression. Regular practice of yoga that pivots on mind-body alignment will address this issue,” he asserts.
Mohan and Indra have engaged with yoga, teaching one of the treasures of this country to learners across the globe, conducting workshops and retreats. Their son Ganesh and daughter Nitya have inherited their parents’ passion.

Yoga figures in the treatment regimen of Ganesh, a medical practitioner, also an expert in Ayurveda. Nitya, a trained musician teaches yoga.
The quiet contribution of this family has not gone unnoticed. The European Union Yoga Convention that opens on Sunday in Zinal, Switzerland, is honouring the quartet by inviting them over as Guests of Honour.
Berlin and Munich are two of the places on the itinerary of the couple, on their way to Zinal. Globetrotters indeed, an irony considering their low key life in Chennai, where their spacious and well-lit house in Palavakkam exudes Spartan simplicity. Imagine a home without television!
“We decided to stay away from the bustle 20 years ago and considered TV an unnecessary distraction. And we have managed very well,” says Mohan cheerfully and Indra nods her endorsement.

A spiritual seeker

Having started as an anchor in Doordarshan, Kanu Priya has explored acting, script writing filmmaking and theatre presentation. After her widely viewed daily television show “Awakening with Brahma Kumaris” which has had a deep impact on the viewers, she is now coming up with “Karmbhoomi”, a show which focusses on young leadership. In an interaction Kanu Priya talks about her new show, what made her choose anchoring and her spiritual quest.
Tell us about your new TV show “Karmbhoomi”.
“Karmbhoomi” is a youth oriented innovative and socially responsible concept with a vision for 2020. Basically it is to create leaders, who can inspire the youth to follow a path of self-improvement and decision making by the year 2020. The series has six main protagonists who believe in changing the world. Each of them will deal different issues like feminism, body image issues, creating awareness regarding mental health among youngsters, tackling the various problems of old-age, creating recycled products, adverse effects of societal pressure and creating awareness for environmental issues. We will be going to every university, every college with our Karmbhoomi leaders. It is all about how, what and why. What we are going to do is create leaders so that they can inspire others.
What is the message in this show for the youth?
I am not giving them any message. I am telling them to come and join and make them aware that they are good and powerful. They have it in them to bring about change so should not shy away from it.
Tell us about your journey as an anchor and how it has changed over time. Also, why did you move to Aastha TV?
I was very good in talking (laughs), so I became an anchor. I always enjoyed getting information and was able to connect it together and pass on to people. I never wanted to be an anchor; it just happened and even as an anchor I was involved in so many others things. In the early 90s, anchoring was more formal and now it is more informal, because that is the trend. It is just a conversational flow of thoughts.
Aastha was my spiritual journey and it happened at a time when I was going through a major shift in my life. I am very thankful to Aastha Channel for those seven-eight years which was my spiritual break.
You have hosted several spiritual programmes. What made you incline towards them?
Spiritual shows were my education break and they just happened and I enjoyed it because it was giving so much value to y life. I am not just sticking to awakening as I am doing everything which pleases me. I have thoroughly enjoyed my shows on tantra, numerology and astrology as well.
Will you describe yourself as a spiritual seeker?
INSPIRING YOUTH Kanu Priya
Kanu priya inspiring youth
As I told you, it just happened. I was always inquisitive about life, that is why I was good anchor but when spirituality happened I started asking questions about life and that's why I became a seeker. It gave me answer to things which I never knew.

Mutual fund managers with the Midas touch

MUMBAI: They dug deep for unpolished gems, pored over reams of annual reports, scrutinised financial statements in detail and retained their calm when things were going haywire. This is why some fund managers have been able to churn out extraordinary returns for investors.

DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund's Vinit Sambre bags the top honour in this year's ET WealthMorningstar ranking of best fund managers. Sambre, who manages the DSP BlackRock Micro Cap Fund and the DSP BlackRock Small and Midcap Fund, has generated annualised returns of 25.51% for investors for the past five years.

At second place is Jinesh Gopani of Axis Mutual Fund, who manages the Axis Long Term Equity Fund and the Axis Focused 25 Fund and generated 19.59% returns. R Janakiraman of Franklin Templeton stands third with 20.2% annualised returns in the past five years.
The ET Wealth-Morningstar ranking is based on weighted average five-year performance of open-ended diversified equity schemes. We included only those equity schemes with an AUM of at least Rs 100 crore. Also, only fund managers who handled a combined AUM of at least Rs 500 crore across all qualifying funds and had a continuous five-year fund management experience were included in the study . Readers should note that the ranking is not based on the returns alone. The aggregate returns were adjusted for risk to evaluate how much risk was taken by the managers to generate the returns.

What's the secret behind the phenomenal returns generated by these financial wizards? Sambre says they stuck to the basics while selecting companies. "We picked stocks where the focus was on corporate governance, management's passion towards their business, companies' competitive advantage and strong financial attributes," he says.

Gopani says a disciplined approach and sticking to quality have worked for him. "It is best to invest in companies where the management is capable of navigating the good and bad phase of the business," he says.

These star managers have interesting nuggets of advice for investors. "Do not invest in low-growth stocks purely because of valuation," says Neelesh Surana of Mirae Asset, who is ranked sixth in the list. Another key advice to investors comes from Chirag Setalvad of HDFC Mutual Fund, who was ranked number one in 2015. "Invest in quality businesses. When there's a structural problem with a business, it's better to exit fast," he says.

All 10 fund managers agree that investors in equity funds should take a long-term view to get the best results. S Krishnakumar of Sundaram Mutual Fund, who is at the ninth place, says investors should "select asset classes and allocation and then stick to them for life."

Promoters hike stake in own firms as confidence grows

Promoters of about one-fifth of the BSE 500 stocks have raised stake in their companies either through open market or warrants or open offers, in some cases, over the past two years, indicating confi dent about the prospects of their companies.

Data compiled by ET shows, two-thirds, or about 76 of the 102, companies in which promoters increased their stake, have outperformed the Sensex. Companies like Indo Count, Caplin Point Lab, Trident have seen share prices increase multi-fold; while shares of Kansai Nerolac, JK Tyre, Ramkrishna Forgings and Strides Shasun, among others, have doubled.

The Sensex has gained about 5% in the last two years. As promoters have all the information about the company, increasing stake signals better times ahead for the business, say analysts. However, it should not be the only reason for buying a stock, they warn.

A spiritual night safari at Varanasi

Varanasi can be a great spiritual experience if you can shut your eyes to the garbage heaps and the human chaos!
We went around waking the Gods that night.  It sounds irreverent, but in actual fact was possibly the most religious thing I’ve ever done. Spiritual I may be, though not religious in a ritualistic sense.
But this time was different. This was Varanasi. And when in Varanasi, you do what Varanasi does. And if you wish to do it with dignity, you beat the crowds and do it earlier. So, we decided to visit the Gods before dawn.
Varanasi is a city that doesn’t sleep, and the reason is diametrically opposite to that which keeps other sleepless cities up. No bars, drunken men or temptresses here; this city is kept up by religious fervor and its Benarasi sari industry. At 2 am all we saw on the roads were cows, cops and men ferrying around white bundles containing exquisitely woven saris.
Barricades and a posse of cops revealed that we had arrived at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Enter and you see a forlorn Nandi facing the mosque at the entrance. This, we are told, is proof that the Vishwanath Temple once stood where the mosque built by Aurangzeb stands today, because Nandi always faces Lord Shiva.
In the sanctum sanctorum we saw an amazing sight. Uniformed cops stepped in and out of the room and participated in rituals along with the priests as the holiest of holy Shiva linga was washed, showered and dressed with much fanfare. The cops not only helped pass along the holy water and other stuff needed for the puja, but also beat drums, blew conches and distributed prasad. And yes, in between all this they also attempted to manage the overenthusiastic crowds that reached despite the early hour!
When Shiva prayers reached a crescendo, a priest started shaking his head vigorously in frenzy, sending his long curls dancing. The cops joined in with a lusty “Har har Mahadev” and shook their heads too till it seemed they would drop off their torsos. Mesmerised by the cops’ religious zeal and jostled by people who all wanted to touch, smell or bow to anything that emerged from the sanctum sanctorum, we managed our moments of private conversation with Shiva and emerged feeling virtuous.
Next we headed to Sankat Mochan Temple to awaken Lord Hanuman, who was still asleep when we reached, possibly stirring at the sound of the loud kirtan at His doorstep. Everyone crowded around at 4.30, but Hanuman’s first sighting of the morning had to be Lord Ram and Sita, whose images were placed in a straight line from His. So, a human corridor was created and curtains both sides were opened simultaneously.
Next on the list was Assi Ghat, famous as a tourist attraction for its aarti, sunrise, culture and rich tradition. Three hundred people visit every hour and Tulsidas is said to have breathed his last here. The Ganges has swollen to almost danger mark this monsoon and the famed Benares steps that lead down to the river have disappeared. As a result the renowned aarti here has been limited to a very small temple and with sunrise obstructed by clouds, this wasn’t much of an experience. The diyas and rose petals we sent floating down the Ganges uplifted us somewhat.
Now it was time for fragrant tea in earthen kullars and some mouthwatering hot kachoris with sabzi.
Shockingly in a city that prides itself on being the holiest of the seven sacred cities, the heaps of garbage are unbelievable. Everywhere you look are heaps of trash that cows feed on. Swachh Bharat indeed!
The best Varanasi experience by far was the evening Ganga Aarti at the Dashahwamedha Ghat, the most spectacular of the ghats associated with legends around Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva. The beautifully synchronized aarti here is a choreographed performance that is our spiritual version of Broadway.
If you can close your eyes to the garbage and don’t mind the unbelievable crowds, Varanasi can be a spiritual experience like no other. But, imagine if the government was actually to clean up the place and organize the chaos? Varanasi would be Heaven then! Would love to go back that day!
