ACID ATTACK VICTIM WANTS BRAVEHEART LIKE CARE TOO

An acid attack victim from Uttar Pradesh who lost vision in one eye and was left with a disfigured face moved the Supreme Court on Monday demanding a treatment similar to that accorded to the 23-year- old Delhi gang-rape victim. The SC sought response from the Centre and State Government for getting her free treatment.
Citing the case of the Delhi gang-rape victim, who was taken to Singapore on Government expense getting the best medical care, the acid victim Nargis in her petition demanded equal treatment as her condition required an urgent face reconstruction surgery. The 34-year-old victim in her petition said, “Victim of recent gang-rape Nirbhaya was sent by the Centre to Singapore by a private plane at the cost of public exchequer and was treated there. The petitioner being citizen of India deserves the same equal protection of law for treatments on the ground of parity.” The bench headed by Justice RM Lodha found merit in her prayer and sought response from Centre and UP Government on extending possible monetary help.
The incident dates back to 2005 when the victim, a law graduate hailing from Agra, was allegedly attacked by persons who wanted to teach her a lesson for standing in the way of her sister’s marriage with a man, who was a friend of the attackers. The impact of the assault was so gruesome that the entire face was burnt and she lost vision in one eye.
