Through her project, Sole Foundation, footwear designer Arsheen makes free shoes for poor children.

Footwear and accessories designer Arsheen Mosa always wanted to use her skills for some social good.

“I once noticed some kids near my house running barefoot. For some of these children, wearing footwear was a luxury. Most of the others who wore footwear were wearing ill-fitting ones,” says 26-year-old Arsheen, who has her workshop in Periamet.

It was then she decided to make footwear for such children, for free.

“I plan to make at least 300 pairs of shoes in sizes that would fit kids aged between 4 and 13 years,” she says.

“The idea is to make simple, durable and comfortable pairs of shoes.”

This social project, which she calls Sole Foundation, has another goal, which is also motivated by a sense of service.

After finishing her graduation from NIFT, she started her brand, selling footwear and accessories.

“I have been working with these craftsmen for years and through this project, they will get a chance to earn more.”

All these shoes will be made from start to finish at a workshop in Periamet.

“I’ll be using the profits from by business to make these shoes. People are welcome to support the project. The making cost of each pair comes up to Rs. 200. More importantly, I need volunteers to help me identify deserving kids and distribute the shoes to them.”

She plans to start distributing the first set of shoes, next month.

“I want to start with my neighbourhood. Next, I’d like to invite kids from underprivileged background and take them to my workshop and show them how it all works and hopefully employ some of them,” she says.
