Madurai’s famous Amma Mess has been dishing out a unique
variety of non-vegetarian recipes An old friend once remarked that a visit to Madurai is
incomplete without a bowl of Ayirai meen kozhambu (a gravy made of
spined loaches) from Amma Mess. Even in typical Madurai-based movies, a shot of
the restaurant is ritualistic in the title card. Such is the popularity of the
25-year-old mess and its ubiquitous menu, that they have become synonymous with
the city’s food culture.
What’s new here? Idicha meen roast (very similar to sura puttu, fish boiled
and smashed into tiny pieces and fried in a tawa with pepper) and idicha nattu
kozhi roast After reading poet Vairamuthu’s Kallikattu Ithikaasam that
talks about the life of people living in barren lands, Senthilvel introduced
kallikattu kozhichaaru He introduced boneless crab omelette for the
first time at the success of the film Sivaji to impress actor Rajinikanth
