Flexitarianism is predicted as the key food trend for 2017. It's about eating predominantly, but not strictly, vegetarian fare and plant produce and is the big trend is the nicer alternative to going completely vegetarian. Will we see not just Meat-free Mondays but Meat-free Tuesday and Thursdays, too, soon?

The camera loves this one. There's nothing like dark-coloured food to seduce the lens. And after making a start in 2016, black burgers, black rice, black mushrooms and black garlic are set to go mainstream on menus in this year. You even have black ice cream! The foods have anthocyanain, an antioxidant pigment that is said to boost health. Tuck in.
Coconut takes all
You had the West waking up to the benefits of coconut water of late and this year too, get set for a demand for other forms of coconut — from coconut sugar as a healthy alternative to other sugars as well as coconut chips, tortillas, butter, ice cream, cakes and flour. Skip just sipping on the water, and get coco (nutty) with the sweet fleshy fruit in the kitchen, soon.
Buy some maca root
Derived from a root that grows in Peru, nutty maca root is said to bust stress and enhance energy levels. It is packed with protein as well as vitamins B1 and B2. Maca is being ground into powder and added to a variety of dishes.
Get set for activated charcoal
Charcoal caught the world's fancy last year in beauty products and detox juices and this year too, activated charcoal is going to be the big, popular ingredient owing to its benefits. It can boost metabolism, rid the body of toxins, cure sluggish digestion and whiten teeth, too. People are using it in infusions, adding it to pizza flour dough and in cocktails as well.
Rise of veggie desserts
It's time to bid goodbye to cocoa, added sugars and rich icing. Say hello new desserts such as cauliflower panna cotta, spinach cupcakes, sweet and savoury beetroot tarts, carrot meringue, cucumber sorbet and avocado cookies.
Blue is the new green
Blue tea made with butterfly pea blossoms, has powerful antioxidants and helps repair cellular damage. It is caffeine-free, detoxifies the liver and can prevent hairfall. Make the switch from from the usual green to see the difference.
May I have some moringa?
We know it in India as murrungakai and now this moringa flower is being hailed as a superfood. Most of the parts of the moringa tree are edible. Cook the seeds as peas, the pods like green beans and leaves just like you would cook spinach. Moringa has a host of health benefits. Did you know that is has more vitamin C than an orange? It has has fibre and phytochemicals. It is also used to treat inflammation and other disorders. Its leaves have high levels of potassium and calcium and can be had fresh or dried. Some sites are calling it 'the new kale'. Add the powder to your smoothie, soup or other beverage, your paratha or make a sambar out of it.
Jackfruit is king
Thick kathal or jackfruit is going to be the new meaty alternative. It has starch, fibres, carbohydrates, electrolytes, fibre, fat and protein. The sweet fruit is easy to cook with. It is rich is vitamin C, iron and calcium and you can make a curry, sabzi or even a pickle out of it. In South India, they make a teatime snack called ghariyo with it. Kathal ki biryani is another popular dish. You can add it to your smoothie and make a sweet kheer out of it.
Pass the bowl, please
Keep aside the mason jar and glasses — bowl food is going to be the big trend this year. It's simply defined as a round bowl of health where you fill a bowl with brown rice, different greens, raw salad, roast vegetables and more. Cover that with some cling film and cart it along to work. We like!
Purple is everything
Rich, royal purple seems to be the sign of good health. In 2017, try all things purple — purple asparagus, purple cauliflower, purple carrots, purple sweet potatoes, etc. Purple-hued foods are said to be packed with antioxidants.
