Excerpts from the talk by Healer Baskar, who spoke at The
Heartfulness Centre’s on World Health Day
It turns out Healer Baskar has a cult following online. He
has over 65,000 followers on his social media pages and many of his videos have
gone viral with 246,473 subscribers.
He gave himself the ‘Healer’ title after he received a
certificate in acupuncture. Before that he was known as ‘Engineer Baskar.’ His
talks, predominantly in Tamil, are popular. At The Heartfulness Centre he has
his audience in splits over the course of his two-hour talk, as he advises,
admonishes, reprimands and coaxes them with his ideas on healthy living and
well being.
His advantage? He speaks the layman’s language, explaining
complex theories pertaining to health in a manner that they understand. At the
five-day residential camp, which is conducted once a month in Coimbatore, he
gives advice on everything from marital relationships to agriculture. After he
completed his civil engineering course in 1998, Baskar worked for about six
months, but had to quit due to ill health. “Due to skin infection, eye
problems, digestion issues and so on, I was under constant medical supervision,
yet no medical practitioner could give a reason for my health condition.
Finally, I was even administered anti-depressants and was out of action for
three years,” says Baskar.
He says he finally decided to do away with all medicines and
set out researching illness and health. “Spirituality was my guiding force and
I learnt all kinds of therapies possible, and mastered yoga and acupuncture.
Ten years ago, I started an institute for teaching yoga.” He says he was too
shy to talk in public then, but he gradually gained confidence and began
addressing larger audiences.
Over the past eight years, the 40-year-old has been talking
on different topics for almost eight hours a day, both in India and overseas.
