Entering a new house is indeed the hour of celebration. Vastu Shastra talks about the auspicious time of entering into a new house in order to lead a happy life.
·  Whenever a new building is built, first of all, the house warming ceremony should be done and only after that the people should start living there.
·  When the sun is moving northwards from the tropic of Capricorn, it is the best time for entry into a new house. Normally, this period is from 22nd Dec. to 20th June called as Uttarayan. These are the days of God whereas the southward movement of the sun is known as Dakshinayan, which is Gods night. In the Uttaryan when the sun moves from east to west, it goes from the north direction. The movement of the earth is also like this. The sun is steady at one place. In the northward movement of the sun the auspicious sunrays are available in a large measure in the east and the north direction. In the Edifice Science, the east and the north sides having a lot of importance, the northward movement of the sun is more beneficial than the southward movement.
·  When the sun is in the Uttara, Magha, Pushya, Ashwini, Revati and Swati constellations in the months of Vaishakh, Shravan or Margashirsh at an auspicious moment, the propitiation ceremony should be preformed and then on the auspicious day the Grihapravesh entry in to new house should take place.
·  Ganesh poojan, Navagraha shanti i.e. Propitiation of the nine planets and the worship of Vastupratima i.e. Image of the building deity should be performed.
·  The image of Vastupurush, silver cobra, copper wire, pearls and corals etc. should be taken in a small earthen pot and some moss should be put on it. The faces of the Vastudevta and the Cobra should be in the east. This pot should be buried in the main southeast corner of the building. It is necessary that the mouth of the pot be covered with a lid. There is no harm in cementing the pit and putting tiles on it. No construction should be done on it after propitiation ceremony. This corner should always be kept clean. At the time of Vastushanti Balibhog i.e. Food, Rice, curd, flour lamps etc. should be given. This Balibhog or offering should be kept at a place where four roads meet. Then without looking back someone should enter the building after properly washing the hands and feet.
·  When the building becomes old and some repair works done propitiation ceremony should be done again. This increases the life of the building.
·  While demolishing an old structure, the demolition should start only after Kshma Yachna i.e. to beg pardon for the demolition.
·  The human being should take at least one round of the building after Vastupoojan. Ladies should take one round of the plot with water pots on their heads or shoulders. They should drop sweet smelling flowers while taking this round.
·  While entering a new house, first of all the people should bow heads to shri Ganesh and the Vastudevta i.e. deity of the building. After that the threshold should be worshipped. The chief of the house along with his wife should enter the house and go to the room on the northeast side. First of all, a pitcher of water or a vessel filled with water should be kept in the north-east corner, wheat and other grains should then be kept in the north-west corner, salt in the south-east corner and in the south-west corner a knife, dagger or a stone should be kept. After doing this all other articles should be brought in the house one after the other.
·  In houses without propitiation ceremony one should not sleep alone in the southeast or the southwest corner. If someone enters the new house without propitiation ceremony they have to face many dangers and calamities. While going to live in a house, which was closed or unused for a long time, propitiation ceremony should definitely be performed.
·  If some owner or builder has built row houses, flats, colony or a commercial complex in that case the person should perform propitiation ceremony in one of the flats, shops or houses and then sell it or give on rental basis.
·  The Vastupurush should not be buried in the open space around the building but in the southeast corner of the main building. The first Vastupurush should not be dug out.

L shape
Vastu Shastra has laid down several principles for buying plots. There are certain kinds of plots that must be avoided and the L-shaped plot is one of them.

These are the reasons why one should not buy L type plots:-

·  A plot without the north-east corner is the worst kind. Vastu Shastra predicts that if any construction takes place in this kind of a plot it will lead to destruction. The head of the family or the other members will always fall sick. In addition to this there would be great financial losses.
·  A plot without the south-east corner leads to clashes between husband and wife, mental strife for ladies, disruption in the education of children and also to economic instability.
·  A plot where the south-west corner is replaced by an extended south and south-east directions will result in sickness, physical disability and mental diseases.
·  If the North West corner of a plot is missing it leads to unnecessary enmity, fear of theft and robbery.

Omen is probably the most widely debated topic. According to Vastu Shastra there are both auspicious and inauspicious omens. If a building is constructed according to the principles of Vastu Shastra the proportion of good omens or auspicious omens will increase. However it must be remembered any unnatural or planned action does not mean omen. The great sage Varahmihir has made logical statement about good and bad omens. According to his studies the good and bad actions of a person in the past are reflected in his future and the pre-intimation is obtained in the present.

There are different types of omens. Some of them are related to the domestic animals like cow, dog, cat, horse, bird and others. Some omens are related to wild animals like lion, deer, tiger and bear.

There are several omens related to cows.

These are as follows:-
1. It is a good omen to see a cow when one is going out on an important work or for traveling.

2. According to Vastu Shastra if one sees a cow and a calf after bath he or she will be successful in work that day.

3. If tears come out of the eyes of a cow the head of the house will be prone to illness and even death.

4. If flies or dogs surround the cow there are definite chances of rain that day.

5. If after sunrise a cow or a calf comes to the main entrance of the building on their own it is a good omen.

Domestic animals also include donkeys and the omens associated with this animal are as follows:-

1. When a donkey is standing still on the right side it is a bad omen. However if is stands in a similar posture on the left side it is considered a good omen.

2. If a donkey calls from behind or from the front it is a bad omen.

3. While going on a tour if the donkey is howling on the right side it is a bad omen. However, if it is on the left side it is a good omen

Very few people might be aware that even horses are related with omens in Vastu Shastra. While some of these omens work as good luck charms the others are inauspicious. Hence if a person owns a horse it will be fruitful if he knows the signs, both good and bad, that are related to this beast of burden.

1) When a horse lifts the right paw he indicates success for his owner.

2) When a horse jumps in joy, the speed of the movement of his tail increases and he slams his right foot continuously it indicates sure success and victory for his owner.

3) In case a person sees a decorated horse it is considered a good omen.

4) If a white or reddish brown horse is seen, it means fulfillment of wishes

5) A black horse coming from the left side, from the opposite direction is a good omen but if he comes from the right side, it is a bad omen.

6) When a horse slams his left leg on the ground it indicates a chance for his owner to travel to a foreign country.

7) If two white horses are seen together it is a good omen.

8) If young lovers see a white horse it is considered a good omen. 9) When a horse neighs before the race he will lose the race but if it neighs during the race he is indicating a victory.

The tenets of Vastu Shastra spell out that even serpents are responsible for omens. These signs can be both auspicious and inauspicious.

The following pre-intimation or omens are related to the serpents:-
1) When an individual sees a serpent crawling from the right to the left side it is considered inauspicious
2) When a snake comes crawling from the front side it indicates enmity
3) If a black snake is seen on the right side before entering a building it indicates inevitable victory over the enemy.
4) When a black cobra with his hood raised is seen it may well lead to an increase in wealth and prosperity.
5) It is a bad omen to witness a serpent before setting out on a journey.
6) Seeing a white snake is inauspicious.
7) While starting on a journey if a snake is seen and after that a donkey is seen on the left side it is considered to be a good omen.

According to the principles of Vastu Shastra the central position in a flat, building or even plot is the space of the Brahma. It is also called the Brahmasthan. Usually the construction is divided into 3 parts. The square or the rectangular positions in the middle is referred to as the Chowk.

Since this is the place of the creator of the universe, Lord Bramha, no construction work should be done here. This space has to be left open. The uppermost roof of the construction can be raised in height by 1 or 2 feet. While building the roof the arrangement for proper ventilation must also be done. In the absence of a roof over the Bramhasthan one has to face many difficulties. Ventilation provides air and light to the entire structure. It will be more beneficial if the roof is built pyramidal shape. on the east and the north directions the roof must have the slopes.

If due to scarcity of land this place can not be kept open then toilets, lumber rooms, kitchens or bedrooms should not be built here. Moreover basements should not be constructed at the centre of the building or plot.

There should be no septic tank, well, water storage tank or boring at the centre of the plot. In case these rules are not followed it will adversely affect the owner of the building and also the people residing in it.

The only color that can be used on the walls of the Brahmasthan is white. Darker shades, such as, black, blue or red colour should be avoided.

Ancient sages of India laid down several principles for the construction of buildings by utilizing the Pancha Bhoota or the elements of nature. They were of the opinion that such a method would bring balance and harmony between man, nature and his buildings. But before proceeding towards construction it is important to select a land. Hence the survey of land or soil is necessary.

The following tips may prove helpful:-

·  Firstly 2 pits of the dimensions 2`X2`X2` need to be dug. Then in one of the pits the same freshly dug clay should be filled again. If the clay remains even after filling the pit it will bring prosperity. If it is just equal or falls short it is best not to purchase the land at all.
·  In the other pit water should be poured. Then the time of the absorption of water need to be noted. If it takes more than an hour it will lead to prosperity. Moreover one must look out for big cracks on the floor of the pit after the complete absorption of water. in case there are big cracks then the construction will be a little expensive.
·  The plot should have been a site for crematorium, samadhi or a basement in the past.
·  While purchasing somebody`s residence, if there have been two or three deaths in an interval of a month or more than one person has committed suicide then it is better not to purchase such an estate.
·  If the colour of the soil of the plot is black upto a depth of 12 feet then no effort can lead to any improvement of position. In case the land has red soil after a depth of 3 or 4 feet it can be purchased.
·  White soil is the next best soil color to the red one. Yellow color soil is of medium level.
·  Vastu Shastra propounds that if after digging the plot till 1 foot a smell of oil or ghee emanates then the land is definitely good.
·  While purchasing a plot it should be kept in mind that there is no big electric pole in the north east direction of the plot. Telephone pole is not harmful.
·  The most important point while selecting the plot is the magnetic meridian. It should be in unison with the axis of the plot. This implies that all the four directions are to be properly obtained in a suitable plot. Even if these directions are rotated upto 15° to 30° the plot is still purchasable.
·  When the four major directions are coming in from the four corners of the plot such plot is called Vidishi plot. At such places the both the good and the bad effects of Vastu Shastra are of a lesser degree. This does not mean that one should not buy such a plot. If the main entrance of such plots is not infested with evil powers then the construction of a building is welcome here.
·  If the soil of the plot is of crumbly rock easy money is obtained. If the soil is yellow it is considered auspicious for business men.
·  In the north-east corner of the plot a flat vessel containing water should be kept on a flat surface. Sweet smelling flowers of medium size should be dipped into this water. If the flowers move in a circular path and approach the north direction the place is very auspicious.

According to Vastu Shastra there are several omens associated with a dog. These omens are both auspicious and inauspicious.
·  When a dog approaches somebody with a shoe or chappal in his mouth the day is predicted as unfavorable for the individual.
·  When a piece of cloth is found in the dog`s mouth it is an indication for trouble.
·  If there is a piece of wet meat or a bone in the mouth of the dog it is a good omen.
·  It is considered an ill omen if the dog carries a dry bone in its mouth.
·  When a dog stretches his legs or swaps his ears it indicates that the work will remain unfinished and one will come across hindrances while traveling.
·  When a dog scratches the walls it suggests that there can be danger of theft.
·  When the dog with his faces the sun in the South-West barks at afternoon, there is a danger from fire or thieves. It also stands as a pre-intimation for clashes in the family.
·  People in a house can fall sick when the dog keeps his body on one step and the head on another and looks towards the woman in the house.
·  When a dog sniffs the shoes or footwear of a person it will lead to a successful journey.
·  When a dog goes to the highest roof of a house and weeps it is an omen for a calamity.
·  When a dog lifts himself towards the legs of a person or lingers near his legs it works as a good omen of success for that person.
·  When a dog barks at a person from behind there is danger looms over the individual.
·  It is a bad omen when a dog eats less than his regular diet or tears come out from his eyes.

Apart from the crow there are other birds as well that according to Vastu Shastra are responsible for both good and bad omens.

Owl
1) Hooting of an owl on the right hand side is considered auspicious.
2) Seeing an owl on the left side is also thought to be auspicious.
3) When an owl sits on the roof of a house or on the head of a person it indicates total destruction
4) If a person sees the romance of two owls his life may be shortened.
5) The nails and paws of an owl are auspicious for the gain of wealth.

Parrot
1) While going out of the house a parrot chirps facing the East when it results in success in the work undertaken.
2) If the parrot calls out while facing towards the South-East one`s enemies are sure to be defeated.
3) If a parrot in a cage sits quietly with its face towards the North-East there are chances of a theft in the house.
4) If the parrot jumps with its face towards the South it is assumed that someone dear to the family will definitely be met.

There are various kinds of omens that are elaborately discussed in the Indian Vastu Shastra. Apart from being related to the animals several incidents from the day to day life also act as omens, both good and bad.

These other omens are as follows:-

·  If a mirror in the house breaks it means there will be a change of residence for the owner.
·  If one witnesses a rainbow after sunset the head of the family falls sick.
·  If a rainbow is seen in the East when there is a slight drizzle it leads to less rainfall that year
·  If rainbow is seen in the rainy season normally there will be no rain.
·  When a cock sits on the top of a house and looks towards the sky it is an indications for heavy rainfall.
·  If a frog croaks during the day time it rains.
·  In the morning when the sky looks red or the leaves of the trees are stretched upwards it indicates rainfall
·  If a person stumbles and falls while coming out of the house it is a bad omen. He should remove his shoes or chappals, sit at home for some time and then go out.
·  If a bangle vendor approaches towards an individual from the opposite direction it is a good omen.
·  If a funeral procession is coming from the opposite direction it is auspicious. But if it is going in the same direction it is inauspicious.

·  In case a person is interrupted while going out and inquired about destination, he or she will have to face failure in the work undertaken.
·  It is a bad omen while going out for some if somebody suggests that one should take his or her meals and then go.
·  While coming out of the house if a person is seen coming from the opposite direction scratching his head it is a bad omen. It indicates loss or failure
·  If a couple coming from the opposite direction is seen it works as a good omen.
·  If a person carrying firewood or live fire comes across people on the road there are chances of accident or bad health.
·  If a person mumbles one of the numbers from 1 to 5 or 7 or 8 and is heard by another person it leads to deep trouble.
·  If a third person mumbles the number six, nine, ten, eleven, fourteen etc. while one is leaving the house and is heard that indicates financial gain and wealth
·  While coming out of the house if one has to listen to the quarrel of his or her neighbors it is an omen for failure.
·  While coming out of the house if a person`s handkerchief, coat, cap or cane falls down there are chances of failure and loss.
·  While worshipping if the lamp or candle blows off naturally it indicates towards approaching hardships
·  Breaking of a pitcher full of water or a lemon indicates hardships.
·  Cracking of panel and glass of windows is a bad omen.
·  While coming out of the house if some person pulls at the clothes it foretells failure.
·  If a marriage procession is crossed by a funeral procession it is very inauspicious.
·  While traveling if an elephant, peacock, horse or ox is seen it is very auspicious.

riha Pravesh is a ceremony performed on the occasion of one`s first entry into a new house or sometimes for a re-entry in an old house. Once the house is ready, the family moves in an auspicious day that is determined by the astrological charts. This Griha Pravesh is an old practiced ritual since the Vedic period the gods and planets are symbolically invited to the newly built home and a puja is performed to appease gods so that they bless the house and its occupants. The puja is also conducted to keep away negative forces and is also marked as the thanksgiving ceremony to the gods and the ancestors for the boon of having a new house. During the Griha Pravesh the `Muhurt` or the auspicious moment is decided according to `Panchang` or Hindu almanac.

Three types of Griha Pravesh are conducted following the ancient Holy Scriptures:
APOORVA :This is the first entry to a newly constructed house on a newly selected land. Apoorva means `New`Griha Pravesh.

SAPOORVA: This is the entry into an already existing house after traveling abroad or migrating elsewhere.

DWANDWAH:Entry into a house after its reconstruction or renovation consequent to damage due to fire, flood or earthquake is termed as Dwandwah or `Old` Griha Pravesh.

For Apoorva Griha Pravesh, the exact auspicious moment is required. For Sapoorva Griha Pravesh and Dwandwah Griha Pravesh, the purity of Panchang should be given due consideration. In a newly built house, the first entry is fortunate when the sun is in `Uttarayan` position and for old or renovated houses the Guru (Jupiter) or Shukra(Venus) is setting. The auspicious and inauspicious months according to the lunar calendar have an important impact on Griha Pravesh.

Griha Pravesh in Magh(part January and part February) symbolizes gain of wealth; Falgun (part February and part March) indicates gain of children and wealth; Baisakh (part April and part May) denotes growth of wealth and prosperity while Jeshtha (part May and part June) brings gain of son and cattle. These are all auspicious months. According to Panchang, the result of Griha Pravesh would be fair that is there will be no significant effect if it is done on Kartik(part October and part November) and Margshirsh (part November and part December). If the Griha Pravesh is done on inauspicious months the result can be negative like could lead to losses, pains, troubles and fear of enemies. The Ashadh(part June and part July), Bhadrapad (part August and part September), Ashwin (part September and part October) and Paush (part December and part January).

Furthermore according to `Tithies` or dates according to lunar calendar 4th, 9th and 14th of a month and Amavas(new moon night) should be avoided. It is also should be keep in mind that no Griha Pravesh is held on a Tuesday.

There are two main ceremonies in Griha Pravesh-Vastu Pooja and Vastu Shanti.
VASTU POOJA: Vastu pooja is conducted outside the house before the actual entry to satiate Vastu Devata. A copper pot is filled with water, `Navadhanya`(nine kinds of grains) and a one rupee coin. A cocnut is then placed on top of the pot and it is covered with a red cloth, which in turn tied with the red thread called `Moli`. After this the priest perform the pooja and the husband and wife, who are the owner of the house take the copper pot together into the house and place it near the `Havan` or ceremonial fire.

VASTU SHANTI: Vastu Shanti or Griha Shanti involves the Havan or Homa. A havan is performed to create a peaceful environment and to keep away all the negative forces and to prevent harmful influences of the planets. This is done with drawing a `Mandala` to invoke the god and nine planets, which act as witnesses to the ceremony. The next ritual is oblation to the Havan. Camphor, sesame, grain and fuel sticks, along with other ingredients are offered to fire or `Agni`, which is supposed to convey them to the gods. The family must carry the Havan kunda to every room. The various herbal and medicinal ingredients in the smoke from Havan disinfect and purify the air within the house. The house is then encircled thrice with threads, starting from the east, which is considered as most auspicious side. At the same time, water is poured as continuous stream around the house. Both of these rituals signify the barrier around the house and protection of it from the evil influences. This is done along with chanting of the Rakshoghna Mantra and the Pavamana Mantra. Next a pit is dug in the southeast corner of the boundary of the house. The sides of the pit are fortified with cowdung paste and the pit is then worshipped. A brick box containing corn, moss and flowers are placed inside the pit, after which the pit is filled up. Since corn symbolizes fertility, this is believed to ensure prosperity.

Once all the pujas are done, a feast and some Dakshina or fees are offered to the priest for his service and well wishes.

The Vastu Pooja and Vastu Shanti are the two essential part of Griha Pravesh. The other Poojas done are Ganapati pooja, Satyanarayan pooja or Lakshmi pooja. Though these poojas are optional and performed only on the recommendation of the priest.

The Griha Pravesh is not complete until the doors of the houses are fitted with shutters, the roof is covered., the Vastu Devata is worshipped or offered sacrifice and the priest is offered some feast. The Griha Pravesh or House Warming ceremony should not be performed if the lady of the house is pregnant. This should be considered while entering a new house and all the procedures given in the scriptures should be followed strictly, otherwise according to Hindu Shastra, troubles and miseries could appear in the house-dwellers lives.

Once the Griha Pravesh ceremony is completed, the family can move into the house. The newly built house should not be locked for few days, as that is considered inauspicious. The holy water is sprinkled all over the house. Finally the guests are served food as Atithi Narayana`(Guest Is God).
