Grey water recycling a must

Grey water recycling is a must for a water-starved country like India, says Nidhi Adlakha

While we are all washing our hands regularly to stay safe from the coronavirus pandemic, we cannot afford to take water for granted by leaving taps on for the 20-second cleansing routine. And since you are now spending a lot more time indoors, how about looking at setting up a grey water system at home?
Approximately 50-70% of the water used in your house results in grey water generation and not even 5% of this is recycled in urban households. This water is suitable for in-situ recycling using simple, low-cost technologies, and it is rather unfortunate that the concept is not commonplace in a water-starved country like India.
With World Water Day being observed tomorrow, and a harsh summer upon us, it’s time we look at not just using water judiciously, but also recycling what we can. Dr. P.Venkateswaran, Deputy General Manager — Operations & Maintenance, at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh, says that traditional in-built practices like landscaping with grey water and rainwater harvesting have diminished due to rapid urbanisation and the commercialisation of land. “Scientists and technocrats are working hard to find alternative ways to source fresh water, like desalination, cloud precipitation technologies, etc. But these advanced technologies are resulting in making water more expensive, artificial and unaffordable for the common man. So when we have simple, reliable, eco-friendly and cost-effective methods like recycling, why should we opt for costly technologies?”

Rising awareness

The Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board is championing the use of treated water (grey and black) for supply to industries, thereby reducing the pressure on freshwater demand, says Venkateswaran. Thermal power plants and industries like Chennai Petrochemical Ltd., Madras Fertilizers Ltd. and Madras Petrochemicals Ltd. are already using treated sewage for industrial purposes. “Residential apartments are using reclaimed water for flushing and landscaping applications due to a statutory compulsion, but the availability of open space for disposal is a major constraint,” he says.

Venkateswaran explains that if grey water is utilised at source, additional costs of treatment, disposal, etc. can be avoided. “India’s urban areas generate 61,948 million litres (MLD) of sewage a day, of which about 35% is collected and treated in sewage treatment plants. In Chennai, 1,200 MLD of water is utilised every day, a minimum of 600 MLD of grey water is generated, which gets microbially contaminated after mixing with black water.”
Going by these numbers, it is evident that there is immense scope and need to recycle grey water. Luckily, there has been a lot of awareness of late, especially in urban areas, says Abhijit Sathe, who founded JalSevak Solutions (jalsevak.in) in 2016. The Navi Mumbai-based start-up was founded with the objective of providing compact, onsite greywater recycling solutions to residential customers. “We perform filtration using dual stage fabric filters and chemical treatment through a controlled dosage of chlorine. The system is low-maintenance; only the periodic cleaning of filters and refilling of chemicals in the chamber is required,” says Sathe, who developed the solution with support from IIT Kanpur’s Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre.

Taking me through his water-saving system, he explains how an average Indian residing in an urban area utilises approximately 180 litres of water every day, of which 45-50 litres (25%) is spent on toilet flushing. “For a family of four, the total amount of grey water generated is approximately 400 litres per day. Using our solutions, this water can be recycled for gardening and toilet flushing, saving 400 litres of fresh water every day,” says Sathe, adding that a small family can potentially conserve 12,000 litres of fresh water every month.
Quoting the example of Kanpur’s Jai Narayan School, he explains that with the new recycling system, the school is saving approximately 3,000 litres of fresh water every day. “They are reusing laundry wastewater to flush toilets in the boys’ hostel. The school is thus saving 3,000 litres of groundwater which would otherwise be used in flushing.”

Cost matters

While awareness has increased, consumers are not open to installing costly solutions. “There is huge demand for cost-effective and compact solutions that require minimum re-plumbing,” says Sathe, who has installed recycling systems in Navi Mumbai, New Delhi, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. For an individual house under construction, installing the solution will cost anywhere between ₹45,000 and ₹65,000. “The price includes the cost of filters, chemical chambers, storage tanks, pump and supporting controls, and plumbing. For an existing individual home, this cost can go up depending on the level of re-plumbing necessary.”
In the absence of automated solutions, people need to manually recycle grey water by using wastewater from the washing machine to wash toilets. “A few customers have also developed a primitive piping mechanism to send kitchen wastewater to their gardens. However, such systems do not function in the long run and suffer from lack of maintenance,” warns Sathe.

Highlighting the benefits at a commercial level, Eshwar N, Chief Marketing Officer at Casagrand, says the STPs (set up by Green Earth Systems) at their various projects in Chennai, Bengaluru and Coimbatore have worked to bring down water consumption. “Water from these plants is used to flush toilets and water landscaped areas. The average estimated water conserved [on a daily basis] is 25 litres per head, for flushing, and 1.5 litres per sq. ft for landscaping,” he says, “The approximate cost to set up a grey water treatment system for an apartment complex of 10 units is ₹3 lakh.”
Eshwar adds that while water recycling as a concept is widespread, there is limited knowledge on the collection and use of grey water. “With modern apartments using STPs integrated with grey water, awareness is gradually increasing.”

What you can do

What people need to do is incorporate recycling systems during construction. Venkateswaran of Sri City advises people to install a ‘dual plumbing’ mechanism to use grey water / STP treated water.

Light grey water sources are bathrooms, showers, hand basins, laundry rinses and RO rejects, whereas dark grey water sources are dish washing, the first wash from the washing machine and kitchen sinks. “At an economical level, every citizen can divert the bathroom wastewater to a small sump followed by a root zone treatment and gravity sand filters. This method doesn’t require power, chemical, or maintenance. Post filtration, this water can be pumped and used for flushing toilets. A minimum of 2.5 sq. ft space per person is adequate,” he explains.

A complete grey (light + dark) water reusing system, including kitchen waste, requires an oil/ grease trap and a sedimentation facility in addition to the system. “A four member family can reuse 360 litres of water a day. An area of about 50-75 sq.ft. is required and the investment will range from ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, and will vary on a case-by-case basis. You can recover this amount in 2-3 years by saving on buying fresh water. Such a treatment facility can also be set up on an open terrace,” concludes Venkateswaran.          March 20, 2020

The lotus eaters


It’s the season fornadurin Srinagar. Glide down theDal in ashikaraand join the jolly lotus stem diggers,perched on boats and foraging for dinner this season is all about the lotus stem, known as nadur or nadroo in local parlance. It has an enviable place in the otherwise meat-rich Kashmiri cuisine. I’m out on these waters foraging for nadur that will be put to good use for dinner.

Of all the dishes prepared with the lotus stem (it is not the root) nadur yakhni is the star. Slices of it are cooked in curd with a hint of aromatic spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, clove and fennel. The pot remains on the fire till thenadur gets tender, but retains a bite, and the curd surrenders its tartness to transform it into a smooth curry. A flavoursome dish that’s subtle and full-bodied, it’s become a favourite ever since I savoured it at a Kashmiri friend’s place. Served simply with small-grain steamed rice, it spells celebration on the plate. The nadur is also tossed into spinach ( palak nadur ), deep-fried as fritters (nadur monji ) and cooked with fish ( gaad nadur ).

When we cross the halfway mark, Nabi speeds up towards a group of men perched on the edge of their boats. “The lotus-stem diggers,” he exclaims triumphantly. This is a set of jolly old men who make their craft appear effortless, as they plunge a hooked staff into swampy waters, dig around with it for a bit, give it a tug and pull it up with a lotus stem securely held by the hook. To me, it seems as thrilling as angling. I attempt it, but realise there are more chances of me toppling into the water than a nadur popping out.

After a gap of three years, there is an abundance of nadur again, which was wiped out from the Dal Lake following the floods of 2014. “I’m back at collecting around 200 stems a day,” smiles Ali Mohammad, one of the diggers, adding, “The texture, size and flavour of the Dal nadur is unmatchable. There arewazas (cooks) who will only use this nadur and nothing else.”
I pick up a whole lot. Some will go into a yakhni tonight and the rest I’ll take home.

Aquatic beauty


The leafy water spinach brings a succulent texture similar to its common cousin, with a bonus of health benefits When you are at a vegetable shop, you have to be quick at picking vegetables that come once in a while. So, when I laid my hands on a bunch of leaves that looked like miniature lotus leaves with pointed ends, the lady standing next to me sorting baby potatoes snapped at me: ‘Those are my kolmi saag. I saw them first’.

To my defence, I answered, “I was only trying to understand what they are.” Kolmi or Water Spinach has thin, hollow stems with long, flat, arrowhead-shaped leaves. If one has to discuss its taste and flavour, its succulent texture is similar to that of the common spinach with a wild and nutty undertone. Those who love rustling these leaves for a quick Indian-style stir-fry or with a mixed veg curry, usually prefer the tender shoots and leaves. The mature ones can get a bit chewy with a strong wild taste. A common favourite in Bengali kitchens, this leafy vegetable is ideal to cool the body and can be very easily grown on damp or swampy land.

Ipomoea aquatica is also known as kangkong in Southeast Asia and is a semi-aquatic plant. With light ovate leaves and a hollow stem that allows it to float on water, the stem and leaves are edible. Under tropical conditions, water spinach can be harvested throughout the year, while in cooler climates it is grown annually.

Of the many names by which it is known in Asian countries, swamp cabbage, Chinese spinach, asagaona, ong choy, phak bung and ensai are most common. The Hindi name of the commonly available leafy vegetable, which is a favourite of the Bengalis and Oriyas, is kalmua saag.
In much of Southeastern Asia, water spinach is considered a tonic, as it contains several vitamins, including A, B, C, and E. As a home remedy, this leafy vegetable is used to treat stomach and intestinal disorders. In many Southeast Asian countries, this vegetable is used in cooking methods that include stir-fry with garlic and chillies, in soups and sometimes as batter-fried tempura.
Since it is inexpensive and easily available, the vegetable is consumed widely in India, because it is said to be useful in treating ulcers, menstrual pain, toothaches and nosebleeds among others. Water spinach, being rich in chemical antioxidants, is said to be more resistant to damage from exposure to the sun and thereby minimises wrinkling of the skin. Due to its healing and detoxifying properties, the leaf is also used as a kitchen remedy against skin itching or insect bites. To use it as a skin ointment, sprinkle water spinach with salt and dab it on the sore spot. A common favourite in Bengali kitchens, this leafy vegetable is ideal to cool the body and can be very easily grown on damp or swampy land

Water for all


They wanted to fix responsibility of maintaining the flow of safe drinking water, using a custom-made approach.

The great solution : The only way to provide safe drinking water to those in need is through water ATMs, not piped water. The pipeline network might take many years to complete. Happiness to us is when elders bless their young team after using the water ATMs or when people say buying safe water at Rs 5 is better than getting free but unsafe water. With a vast experience in water management, Parag was looking for a larger project that would also make a deep impact on society. One area of particular importance, he felt, was the huge gap in the demand and supply of safe drinking water. During his frequent travels between Pune and Mumbai, he used to see beggars asking for water besides money. “For them, water was more important than Rs 2 or Rs 5 we gave them. That established the need for safe drinking water,” he says. He realised safe drinking water could be a social service as well as a good business. Together with younger brother Anurag, he launched Janajal, a water supply company, in 2013. So far, the company has dispensed around 125 million litres of safe drinking water. They have set up around 400 water dispensing machines, popularly called ‘water ATMs’, which will be augmented by another thousand next year. They say the challenge in safe drinking water is maintaining sustainability. For instance, water treatment plants are installed by many organisations or under the corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives of various companies, but these are not maintained professionally. Janajal ensures that all filters, membranes and other parts of their water treatment plants are replaced from time to time to maintain quality of drinking water. There were people willing to invest capital but no one was willing to bear the cost on ongoing maintenance. Therefore, the brothers developed the water ATM concept. They say consumers are very happy to pay a nominal cost for the water as long as it is affordable. They have national-level tie-up with pathology chain Thyrocare, which has a water treatment laboratory. All of Janajal’s tests are done there following norms laid down for safe drinking water. They also have a real-time monitoring system to ensure the quality of all their devices, and their patented micro controllers.  —Kiran D. Tar
